Fellowship – Associate Musical Director

This role will provide a newly graduated musical director the essential next step into professional practice. Central will offer a specialist experience of teaching and performing and the development of professional practice and networking within a training environment. Central’s staff will be the Associate’s professional colleagues. The Associate will be mentored throughout the period of engagement by Professor Wendy Gadian, the Course Leader for BA Acting Musical Theatre. The Associate Musical Director will be able to enhance the School’s Undergraduate BA Acting Musical Theatre course through peer-to-peer support of BA Acting Musical Theatre students and by demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm in developing projects.

Applicants must have knowledge and understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Musical Director within professional practice and demonstrate a commitment to pursuing musical direction as a career. An in depth knowledge of Musical Theatre repertoire, and a degree or equivalent in Music are also required. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate evidence of strong keyboard skills and understanding of sung voice techniques.

The Associate Musical Director will be awarded by Central following an application and interview process in summer 2022. There will be one available Fellowship for the academic year 2022/23.

If coronavirus restrictions are in place in September 2022, Central is well organised to ensure that the AMD still benefits from a full experience.

Previous recipients of the Fellowship can all be seen achieving successful careers as musical directors, composers, arrangers, orchestrators and teachers across all aspects of the performing arts industry.

“Over 25 years ago Mountview created the UK’s first specialist three-year musical theatre course and our alumni continue to dominate the industry.”

There is a strictly limited number of places available each year and students receive over 30 hours’ contact teaching time – including one-to-one singing lessons – each week.

The course develops technical skills through practical classes, workshops and performances and is split between the three essential musical theatre skills: acting, singing and dance.

In the second year, students apply their skills in collaboration classes which include peer integration and team teaching to enhance creativity and help build connections between subjects. Students engage with a range of classic and contemporary plays and musicals from across the globe for example Orphans by Dennis Kelly, Rabbit by Nina Raine, Oklahoma! by Rodgers and Hammerstein, After Juliet by Sharman Macdonald, Fun Home by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori. A range of dance styles are also taught including Hip Hop, Latin American, Blues and Folk.

Additionally, there is time given to tailored ‘surgeries’ to focus on detail and help students develop independence and confidence in their practice. Mountview’s Industry Liaison Manager works closely with performance students to understand and prepare them for life as a working actor.

The focus of the third year is film and public performance. Students present a range of productions in Mountview’s theatres and an industry showcase, to agents, casting directors and the general public, as well as create a singing voice reel and film showreel.

In 2020, 100% of performance students graduated with an agent. 95% of students are working in the industry within a year and 70% of long running West End productions feature Mountview graduates.

Mountview alumni include Olivier Award winners Giles Terera MBE (Hamilton) and Rebecca Trehearn (Showboat) and Black British Theatre Award winners Noah Thomas (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie) and Nicholas McLean (Wicked), as well as actor and broadcaster Amanda Holden.

Students perform in a variety of performance scenarios including main house theatre productions at professional venues in Bristol such as The Bristol Old Vic Theatre, The Tobacco Factory, Circomedia and The Weston Studio at Bristol Old Vic. They also have the opportunity to perform in front of a wide variety of audiences in touring theatre productions to schools, colleges, arts centres, theatres and other venues in Bristol and across the West Country.

The playful nature of the actor’s ensemble runs throughout the programme. The investigation and celebration of diverse individual stories and backgrounds, together with the maintenance of that individuality throughout the training, enables the building, enhancing and honing of performance skills in order to create a unique and flexible actor primed for the modern performance stage, film and digital media.

Small cohort sizes allow detailed attention to the needs of the individual and the excellent student support allows you to chart a safe and secure pathway through the programme.

The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre programme is designed to equip you with a comprehensive, highly developed and fully integrated set of technical skills that will enable you to adapt to the diverse opportunities and wide-ranging demands of today’s rapidly expanding musical theatre industry. Distinctively, the programme also incorporates modules dedicated to exploring the creative process involved in the development of new work, in order to further extend your professional potential.

Practical classes and workshops focused on singing, voice, speech and text run throughout the first two years, supported by individual tutorials. Dance classes cover jazz technique and repertoire including street and commercial forms as well as ballet and tap, Latin and ballroom styles.

Acting classes in the first term guide you through practical explorations of approaches to improvised performance, working with texts, developing character and building relationships through the rehearsal process. The second year Acting module comprises of two components focusing on a) approaches to Shakespeare and other heightened texts and b) an investigation of the specific practices and demands of the film and television industry.

A series of performance-based projects runs throughout the first two years providing opportunities for practical exploration of the integrated and creative processes involved in the rehearsal and production of new and known works.

A ‘Bridge Project’ at the end of the second year places you in a professional rehearsal environment working alongside stage managers, lighting and sound designers towards a short run of performances of scenes, or an abridged work, for an invited audience.

In the final year, you will take part in rehearsals and public performances of two consecutive, fully staged productions working under professional conditions as part of the College’s Richard Burton Company.

Regular seminars running throughout the course offer insights into the professional context, identifying key developments within the industry and offering strategies for finding employment, with particular emphasis on audition technique.

Towards the end of the third year, you will perform in Showcases in Cardiff, London and New York (US students only) to an invited audience of industry professionals including agents and casting directors.

Entry Requirements

Normal entrance requirements include A levels, BTEC or equivalent qualifications, including WBQ, Scottish Highers, BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, International Baccalaureate, Advanced GNVQ, AVCE or Advanced Diploma (Level 3), or recognised international qualifications. However, candidates with an exceptional level of practical ability may be accepted without formal qualifications.
