Following substantial cuts to its government funding in 2016, Creative Access has been awarded £45,000 over three years to provide off-the-job training programmes for paid interns from BAME backgrounds. Working with creative firms including the National Theatre, BBC, Almeida, Paines Plough and Royal Shakespeare Company, 6 and 12 month-long internships will include access to a mentor, induction days, masterclasses, pastoral support, networking, CV clinics and interview training for young people. The Watts Gallery Trust

The Watts Gallery Trust will use their grant from the Foundation to restore the renowned arts and crafts masterpiece Watts Chapel. Promoting the appreciation of Victorian artist G F Watts and ceramic artist Mary Seton Watts, the trust promotes the Compton area as a centre for Victorian art and social history. Preserving the unique artistic interiors of the chapel for future generations, the grant will contribute to the restoration of the chapel’s renowned gesso panels and return the chapel to its original purpose to serve the community for burial and memorial services. The Orpheus Centre

The Orpheus Centre is a unique performing arts college for disabled young adults, based in Surrey. Their performing arts projects develop their young artists’ skills and experience in drama, music, dance and multimedia, alongside preparing them for independent living. They are a registered charity (charity number 1105213). The Orpheus Centre was founded by Richard Stilgoe in 1998. Their activities are: The Orpheus College uses performing arts as a vehicle for teaching and their curriculum focuses on arts, independence, employment and functional skills. Domiciliary Care offering a domiciliary care plus service, supporting their service users in their independence skills and achieving their own person-centred plans. Orpheus Housing manages two supported housing projects, empowering tenants to be in control of their own homes. In addition to the core learning programme, students have the opportunity to participate in short courses, working with a range of professional musicians. They have regular performances in their Barn Theatre as well as developing large scale productions to be performed externally. In May 2010 they performed All Over the Place at the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House and in July 2010 they then performed Orpheus the Mythical at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre for five nights. They offer their young artists a variety of creative opportunities, bringing them into contact with a range of methods and styles. However, at the heart of their practice is a commitment to unlock the authentic voice of their young artists. In November 2010 the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation agreed to fund arts bursaries over a three year period at The Orpheus Centre. In December 2010 six part time bursaries were funded. The Trustees are very impressed with the work undertaken by Orpheus to develop skills and experience in drama, music and dance for less able young adults and consider that supporting arts bursaries at The Orpheus Centre fits well within the objects of The Foundation.

The Bush Theatre

The Bush is one of the country's leading new writing venues. Since its foundation in 1972, it has gained an impressive reputation for its ability to spot and nurture new playwrights and has launched the careers of highly respected talents including Tony Kushner, Catherine Johnson, Stephen Poliakoff, and Victoria Wood. In partnership with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, they have secured a 125-year lease with a peppercorn rent on the Old Shepherds Bush Library, a spacious, historic and beautiful building in the heart of the community. The work ahead means transforming the library space into an intimate theatre with a workshop, rehearsal rooms, writing rooms, spaces for arts education and professional development, and a café bar and quiet reading room. This capital programme is a challenging one but with the first phase of their development they are aiming to launch their first season in October 2011 in a new auditorium, with a fully working bar and a flexible community and educational space. In July 2011, the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation agreed to a one off grant towards the first phase of the transformation of the old Shepherds Bush Public Library into new premises.

The RSC Young Company

The RSC Young Company provides intensive performing arts and theatre skills workshops at the Royal Shakespeare Company for 10 local disadvantaged or excluded young people aged 14-15. Beneficiaries are disadvantaged students who share a love of drama and have been recommended by local schools or institutions. Students will experience a high quality of artistic training at the RSC and aim to achieve a recognised qualification and high profile performance projects at the end of the 10 month course. They will take part in workshops held by creative teams in Stage Management, Lighting, Sound, Events, Producers, Marketing, Press, Front of House, Development and Movement. The aim is to give these young people a breakthrough and support is given to those who complete the course to go into further education, training or the workplace. In October 2011, the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation awarded a one off grant to support the Young Company in 2011/12. The Trustees were particularly impressed that the high quality of artistic experience at the RSC will be offered to young disadvantaged people who have an enthusiasm for theatre.

The Royal Court is a writers' theatre, dedicated to finding and producing new plays. It creates the conditions for writers to flourish and brings their work to the widest possible audience. In January 2012, the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation agreed a grant of £150,000 paid over 2 years to fund the Studio, the Royal Court's creative hub, where new and young writers are nurtured to produce ground breaking theatre. The key projects are the Young Writers workshop programme, Unheard Voices, an outreach programme to encourage writing in disadvantaged and minority communities and Play Development Readings where resources and expertise are shared with established artists. The programmes include a diverse cultural mix of participants and a significant emphasis is dedicated to minority communities. The Trustees considered the Studio to be hugely influential in the lives and careers of young writers and were delighted to become the main funder of the project for a considerable period of time.

The Irene Taylor Trust "Music in Prisons" delivers intensive high quality music projects in prisons throughout the UK to provide positive experiences and help in the process of rehabilitiation, education and the forming of life skills. Music in Prisons was set up in 1995 to ensure that prisoners would have access to high-quality creative music experiences designed to inspire and engage them in positive opportunities away from crime. In January 2012, the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation awarded a one off grant to The Irene Taylor Trust "Music in Prisons - Sounding Out" programme which delivers music projects and enhances rehabilitation of ex-offenders who have successfully completed intensive music projects in prison. "Sounding Out" will provide professional music tuition within the context of creating performances in a band, and arrange paid work performances and placements within a community programme of events. The Trustees were particularly impressed by the quality of the music provision and the training and opportunities given to support ex-offenders in the community. HM Prisons included in the project are Wormwood Scrubs, Erlestoke in Wiltshire and Highpoint North in Suffolk.

Wales Millennium Centre

The Wales Millennium Centre is the largest theatre in Wales with a relatively small pool of technical staff for such a major employer. In 2012, they set up a Creative Apprenticeship Scheme which invests in, encourages and develops future generations of stage technicians, electricians and other "behind the scenes" roles through hands-on experience in house and on tour over the period of a year. The apprentices are offered peer-to-peer training and mentoring in areas including lighting, sound, electrics and rigging. They work within the main theatre and across other venues, both within the Centre and off-site. In September 2012, the Trustees of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation agreed to provide funding to cover salary, tools and external training for one apprentice per year for three years. The Trustees of the Foundation were particularly impressed with the opportunities and exceptional training this scheme provides to young technical theatre apprentices at a crucial stage in their career development. As at November 2014, the first apprentice - Joanna - has completed her 12 month placement and concluded that she would definitely like to pursue a career in Stage Management. She is working on The Lion King at the Centre over the Christmas period. The second apprentice - Carly - is currently midway through her placement with the Centre. She grew up with the theatre and has always been acting or helping backstage at school, college and elsewhere. She applied for the apprenticeship as she wanted to widen her experience in technical theatre with a view to becoming a qualified stage manager in the future.

Oldham Coliseum Education Partnership Scheme

Oldham Coliseum Theatre is a building-based producing theatre, dating back to 1885. It is a well-attended venue in the North West of England that produces 8 in-house shows a year and is also a receiving house for a variety of visiting companies and artists. In January 2013 the Trustees of the Foundation awarded a one-off grant to Oldham Coliseum giving 450 pupils aged 16-18 from surrounding schools and colleges the opportunity to attend workshops and learn all aspects of technical theatre, acting, directing, set design and musical theatre. The workshops will provide career pathways and count towards the attainment of the Trinity College Arts Award qualification. In addition, 30 teachers and lecturers will benefit from taking part in career development and vocational training. The Trustees were particularly impressed by the opportunities students will be given to participate in a working theatre together with the aim for schools to continue elements of the programme in the long term.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) was founded by William Morris in 1877 and trains specialists in historic building conservation. Graduates go on to work in statutory and voluntary heritage organisations, practices and construction businesses or specialise and set up their own business. In April 2013 the Trustees of the Foundation awarded a grant over 2 years to SPAB to fund 2 full time scholarships in each year for young architects, surveyors and engineers in building conservation, learning specialist repair methods and conservation skills. Royal Shakespeare Company

In April 2013 the Trustees of the Foundation awarded a grant over 3 years to the Royal Shakespeare Company's Learning Performance Network partnering primary and secondary schools in deprived areas of the UK with regional theatres and RSC practitioners aiming for young people to see and participate in live performances of Shakespeare. The programme includes workshops in schools and local theatres as well as residential courses at the RSC. Over 2,000 students will take part and all will be encouraged to take the RSC Shakespeare Challenge Arts Award. The RSC was the recipient of a grant from the Foundation in 2011. The Trustees noted that the RSC had previously demonstrated how high quality artistic provision can contribute to improved levels of academic ability and attitudes to school generally and they were delighted to extend their support for this project.

Part of the challenge of looking after these collections is that these treasures are the responsibility of parochial church councils who are volunteers and have many pressing needs on their church's finances. With the help of the dioceses the Church Buildings Council has identified the 100 artworks currently most in need of conservation. Berkshire Maestros is a music education charity. They ensure access to high quality musical experiences to the widest possible range of children in the Berkshire area, regardless of their background or ability. The Almeida is a 325 seat theatre in Islington, North London, with a reputation for innovation and excellence, from classics to new works. In July 2015, the Trustees of the ALW Foundation awarded a one-off grant to Hackney Empire to fund the Hackney Empire Young Artists Company to learn all aspects of producing their own piece of musical theatre and gain skills and confidence to develop as professional artists. The project will take place over a period of one year in weekly evening sessions and intense weeks in the Summer/Spring holidays, culminating in production at Hackney Empire and tour to Edinburgh Festival in Summer 2016. Although the initial project title was the Hackney Harlem Project, it was important that the young company founded their own identity and mission statement – therefore as the project moves forwards it will be called the ‘TWIST Theatre Company project'. Stage One

Stage One has been providing training and support to new UK producers in theatre for 40 years. The charity has been awarded funding over two years to fund The Producer Placement Scheme that offers a unique hands-on training opportunity within established and experienced producing companies or regional subsidised venues. Successful applicants to the scheme will receive a living wage for the year spending either 6 months with one production office and 6 months with another or 12 months within one producing house where they learn all aspects of theatre production. The training is open to those who do not have the funds to pay for a course or are hindered by their geographic location.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) received funding towards Next Generation, a talent development programme for young people aged 13 to 18. The programme will recruit talented young people from the RSC’s nationwide partnerships with schools and regional theatres, known as the Associate Schools programme. Some of the best theatre-makers, actors and directors in the business will give advice, teaching, support and practical experience, under the guidance of the RSC, with workshops and residential courses in Stratford-upon-Avon. Next Generation will encourage new talent, who would not have had access to these opportunities, to enter a career in the theatre in either acting, directing or working backstage.

Theatres Trust

Theatres Trust, the national advisory public body for theatres that advises on planning, operations, regeneration, development, architecture and design to make theatres sustainable and accessible has been awarded a grant over three years. Since April 2012, ALWF has supported the UK Small Grants Scheme generating 241 applications and 50 awards to address urgent building repairs and help theatres in need and at risk across the UK. Funding will extend this scheme for a further three years and support more theatres with their capital projects. Grants awarded include Royal Court Liverpool, Oldham Coliseum, Hackney Empire, Bush Theatre, Blackpool Grand Theatre, Shanklin Theatre Isle of Wight, Theatre Royal Dumfries and Wyeside Arts Centre, Wales.

Taking place over 4 terms of weekly workshops, the project provides professional tuition and combines art forms of dance, DJing, music production, rapping, beatboxiing and singing to produce original performance pieces and compositions at the end of each term. DJ School UK said: “DJ School UK are thrilled to have been successful in receiving a grant from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. The grant will help us develop an innovative project in performing arts with the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Yorkshire Dance. Young people will be able to learn more about other art forms and benefit from taking part in creative performance based activities in Yorkshire”.

Eskdale Mill & Heritage Trust

Eskdale Mill, located near the waterfalls of Whillan Beck in Lake District National Park, has been awarded one-off grant from the Foundation towards the installation of a self-sustaining waterwheel. Eskdale Mill is a grade 2* listed watermill dating from 1539, rescued by local people in 2003 who set up the Trust and rasied £130,000 to save it from County Council disposal. The Mill is now open to the public as a visitor attraction and educational resource on commercial milling, receiving over 7,000 visitors a year. Peter van Zeller of Eskdale Mill said: "After five years of planning and fundraising towards this new waterwheel project, it is gratifying to be offered such support from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. It covers the last hurdle before construction and installation can begin, enabling our aspiration to make the ancient Eskdale Watermill sustainable for the future."

RSC Next Generation is a talent development programme which empowers young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to explore on and off stage careers in the performing arts. Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has renewed support for the programme for 2 years starting in 2024.

Next Generation is a unique year-long talent development programme established in 2017, which empowers young people (13-25) facing social challenges and disadvantages to explore careers in the performing arts. Next Gen delivers bespoke professional training and guidance by RSC practitioners, gives unparalleled opportunities, develops aspirations, provides support with auditions and advice on getting into the industry. Selected Next Gen graduates go on to paid roles within the RSC, both back stage as part of the RSC’s impressive apprentice programme and on stage for R&D readings and as part of the professional cast.

National Theatre

2024/25 sees a new round of Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation support for the National Theatre's NT Connections bursaries.

NT Connections engages about 6,000 young people aged 13-19 from 250 young companies across the country every year. They receive masterclasses and mentoring from professional theatre-makers and perform new plays written for the programme at their own venues and at one of 33 festivals that take place across the country. One of each of the ten plays is then performed in the Dorfman Theatre in July. 2024 sees the Foundation continuing support for bursaries for disadvantaged groups and placements on the NT Director’s weekends.

The Glasshouse

The Glasshouse (previously Sage Gateshead) received Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation support for their Make Music: Young People Programme over 2 years. Since then they've provided an incredible 6,085 music sessions for young musicians, ranging from guitar duets and jazz ensembles to string orchestra and workshops with Jess Gillam. 41% of students receive a means tested bursary to allow them to participate, removing barriers and encouraging collaboration to increase aspirations.

Viva Arts & Community Group, Soham

Viva Arts received 2 year funding from Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation in 2022 to fund creative apprenticeships, youth theatre, workshops and Saturday school for young people in the rurally isolated area of East Cambridgeshire.

Over the past year, Viva Arts delivered 4 Musical Theatre Holiday Workshops for 120 participants, 30 Weeks of Performing Arts Saturday School for Young People and 8 Masterclasses with Industry Professionals with over 120 attendees. Participants reported positive outcomes including boosting confidence, improving literary, developing skills, raising aspirations and achieving nationally recognised qualifications such as LAMDA exams.

We love that Viva Arts is a valued community asset, offering activities that increase volunteering, bring community cohesion and reduce isolation.

Old Vic Theatre Makers

One of our first reports on our 2022 giving is from Old Vic Theatre Makers. Now in its third year, OV Theatre Makers is a free, six month training programme for young people aged 18–25 from across the United Kingdom.

Across the OV Theatre Makers programmes, participants build a toolkit of theatre-making techniques to help them in the creation of their own work through industry led masterclasses and by collaborating with each other. The programme increases access to the arts through masterclasses with industry professionals, bespoke support and free tickets via a theatre ticket bursary. In a new addition this year, The Old Vic hired Streatham Space Project to host the OV Theatre Makers final event, titled ‘…And Tomorrow’. The Scratch Night was comprised of 17 new scenes, monologues and short films, all of which were devised, written, directed, filmed and performed by the cohort. Participants were encouraged to try new ways of theatre-making and step outside of their comfort zone.
