The shortlist for the second annual Scottish Heritage Angel Awards, funded by the ALW Foundation, has been revealed today. 'Angels' behind the restoration of a memorial tower on Orkney, the safeguarding of a Victorian-built community hall in Glasgow and a Borders-based project that has recorded Scotland's industrial brick makers are amongst those to have been chosen to go through to the finals of the 2016 Scottish Heritage Angel Awards. The shortlist for the 2015 Historic England Angels, funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, has now been revealed. On 12th June 2016 at the 70th annual Tony Awards, it was announced that the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation is awarding $1.3million to the American Theatre Wing, founder of the Tony Awards, for the new, national 'Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative'. The money will go towards establishing a multi-faceted initiative which helps talented students overcome economic barriers to pursue a career in the theatre and provide enterprising state school drama teachers with the resources they need to nurture young talent in their schools. Young People’s Chorus of New York City

In March 2016, the Trustees were delighted to award a grant to the Young People’s Chorus of New York City Satellite Schools’ Programme teaching professional choral singing, free of charge, to 1,100 young people in 14 schools across NYC.

The classes are available to young people aged 7-18 from diverse backgrounds who would not otherwise have the opportunity to reap the benefits of musical education and performance.

Since 2010, the Foundation has awarded grants of over £11 million to more than 255 recipients, all for projects which make a visible impact on the quality of life of both individuals and local communities. In 2015, the Foundation awarded over £1.5 million in 46 new grants to organisations, made 17 grants totalling £860k to projects in their second and third year of funding and provided 30 musical theatre scholarships worth over £300k to young performers on the brink of their careers. The grants focus on the enhancement of arts education and participation, improving access to the arts for all, and increasing diversity across the arts, culture and heritage sector.

Class Act Project In October 2015, the trustees of the Foundation awarded a one-off grant to Traverse Theatre’s Class Act Project, a professionally led 6-month playwriting scheme for up to 70 secondary school children aged 15 to 18 from five state schools across Edinburgh. The Theatres Trust - seventh round of small grants announced

Successful theatres in this round are the Upfront Arts Theatre in Penrith, Bristol's volunteer run Wardrobe Theatre, Colne's Pendle Hippodrome, the Category B-listed Theatre Royal Dumfries, and the Horse and Bamboo Theatre in Rossendale. Aylesbury Vale Youth Theatre

Eskdale Mill

Eskdale Mill, located near the waterfalls of Whillan Beck in Lake District National Park, has been awarded one-off grant from the Foundation towards the installation of a self-sustaining waterwheel. Eskdale Mill is a grade 2* listed watermill dating from 1539, rescued by local people in 2003 who set up the Trust and rasied £130,000 to save it from County Council disposal. The Mill is now open to the public as a visitor attraction and educational resource on commercial milling, receiving over 7,000 visitors a year. Peter van Zeller of Eskdale Mill said: "After five years of planning and fundraising towards this new waterwheel project, it is gratifying to be offered such support from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. It covers the last hurdle before construction and installation can begin, enabling our aspiration to make the ancient Eskdale Watermill sustainable for the future."

START Schools Project Northern Ballet's START Schools project has been awarded a 3 year grant by the ALW Foundation. This project is for young dancers, delivering dance workshops and supported visits to ballet productions for primary and secondary school children in the Leeds area, bringing dance to those who would otherwise have minimal opportunity to engage with the arts. Director of Learning, Selina McGonagle said: “Northern Ballet are committed to broadening access to dance for people of all ages, means, and abilities. START Schools is a vital part of our mission to enable disadvantaged young people to take part in dance and gain that inspiring first visit to the theatre. With a recent loss in funding for the project, we were close to having to reduce the scope of START Schools at a time when the opportunities offered by the project are as needed as ever. We are hugely grateful for the three-year support of the Foundation. The grant will ensure that we can continue to deliver these experiences to thousands of young people from our local community over the next three years, and will support our work in breaking down the barriers that many face in accessing the arts”.

The ALW Foundation are pleased to confirm a one-off grant to DJ School UK working in collaboration with West Yorkshire Playhouse and Yorkshire Dance. Taking place over 4 terms of weekly workshops, the project provides professional tuition and combines art forms of dance, DJing, music production, rapping, beatboxiing and singing to produce original performance pieces and compositions at the end of each term. DJ School UK said: “DJ School UK are thrilled to have been successful in receiving a grant from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. Young Artists Company The Trustees of the ALW Foundation have agreed to fund the Hackney Empire Young Artists Company in order to learn all aspects of producing their own piece of musical theatre and gain skills and confidence to develop as professional artists. The project will take place over a period of one year in weekly evening sessions and intense weeks in the Summer/Spring holidays, culminating in production at Hackney Empire and tour to Edinburgh Festival in Summer 2016. Hackney Empire said: "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation funding will enable us create a new Young Company of emerging artists, helping them to take the next step on the path to a career in the industry. The participants in the Young Company will have graduated from our Artist Development Programme for 13 – 17 year olds, and we’re delighted that we can now continue working with these young people through to 21 years, helping them develop as artists. The ethos at Hackney Empire is very much about encouraging and supporting BAME young people and helping break through that glass ceiling, and this grant from the ALW Foundation will help support a new generation".

The Theatre's Trust's Small Grants Scheme, funded by The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, helps theatres in need and at risk address urgent building repairs, improve their operational viability, introduce environmental improvements, and enhance physical accessibility. Grants this time have been awarded to:- Little Angel Theatre, London. Their grant will help repair and replace the flat roof over the administrative office and backstage section of the theatre. Actors Workshop, Halifax. The funds from the Small Grants Scheme will help repair roof tiles and gutters of the theatre. Dunoon Burgh Hall, Scotland. Funding will help install a low rise lifting platform to provide access to the stage, ensuring this facility is fully accessible for wheelchairs and those with mobility needs. People's Theatre, Newcastle. Funds awarded will help the theatre undertake essential building services work and asbestos removal in advance of some major redevelopment work to the front of the theatre. Polka Theatre, London. House of Lords debate on Arts in Education

Today, Thursday 27th November 2014, The Earl of Clancarty led a debate in the House of Lords on the case for arts education in schools. Lord Lloyd Webber believes passionately in the importance of the arts in education but was sadly unable to take part due to rehearsals for the new production of CATS at the London Palladium. He is most grateful to the Earl of Clancarty for raising the debate and would like to make the following points: "Quite apart from the intrinsic value of the arts to people of all ages, there is growing research evidence on the benefits of high quality arts provision in developing a range of skills and attributes in young people, from confidence to increased creativity. As the OEDC report on the impact of arts education concluded: 'the main justification for arts education is clearly the acquisition of artistic habits of mind ... not only the mastery of craft and technique, but also skills such as close observation, envisioning, exploration, persistence, expression, collaboration and reflection - the skills in thinking and creativity and the social and behavioural skills that are developed in the arts.' I was particularly struck by the difference excellent music provision can make to schools in challenging circumstances when I visited Highbury Grove School in Islington in November 2012. The school has a high proportion of students from less advantaged backgrounds, with 71.3% in receipt of Pupil Premium funding and 50% with English as a second language. Against this background they have built up a phenomenal classical music programme for all students. 700 of them receive free instruments and tuition, and are able to play in orchestras and ensembles as well as in some inspiring venues. As well as achieving Artsmark Gold three times, Highbury Grove was rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2010 and examination results in all subjects are improving year on year. Inspired by Highbury Grove's achievements, the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation established the Music in Secondary Schools Trust in conjunction with the Charles Wolfson Trust in 2013. 1700 children in 6 secondary schools are now benefiting from the 'Andrew Lloyd Webber' programme. The benefits are already being seen, with Lister Schools' most recent Ofsted report being raised to Category 2 (good). There is currently no legislation that ensures every child has an entitlement to high quality arts provision throughout their education. High quality teaching and in depth experiences benefits not just individuals, but schools, communities and the wider community."

A project to collect and record bricks, the restoration of a WW1 memorial in Orkney, and a television channel run by young people to highlight an archaeological dig, were amongst the winners revealed at the second annual Scottish Heritage Angel Awards, held in Edinburgh on 18 October 2016. Funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, the Angel Awards culminated in winners being named across five categories at a ceremony hosted by author and broadcaster, Vanessa Collingridge. The evening and awards programme was a celebration of the efforts of remarkable volunteers, or 'Angels' who give up their time to help better understand, appreciate, protect and celebrate Scotland's heritage and history. On Friday 17th March, 30 students aged 11-16 from the Music in Secondary Schools Trust Saturday School will take part in a ‘sleepout’ to raise awareness of homelessness for Centrepoint. The event marks the end of four weeks of sponsored practice of one hour every day to raise funds for the charity. Each student has a £100 sponsorship target and will be preparing for their upcoming performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major with Nicola Benedetti in June in their practice. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded grants worth over half a million pounds to 17 projects across the UK this spring. These form part of the Foundation’s active grant giving programme, which supports projects that focus on the enhancement of arts education, participation, improving access and increasing diversity across the arts, culture and heritage sector. The recipients of this round of grants are Arts Insight, Awards for Young Musicians, Furthering Talent, Beatroute Arts, The BRIT School, CLIC Sargent, Creative Access, Crisis UK, Denbighshire Music Co-operative, Frantic Assembly, Hoxton Hall Trust, Live Music Now, Malvern Theatre, MOLA, Rifco, Scottish Civic Trust and Tara Arts Theatre. The Foundation reveals its 2016 Annual Review

I am delighted to be sending you The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation 2016 Annual Review with details of our activity in 2016 and of all the grants awarded during the year. The Foundation made a bigger impact than ever in 2016, with highlights including the establishment of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative in the US with American Theatre Wing and the publication of our research into the pipeline for BAME talent in the performing arts, Centre Stage. In 2016, the Foundation awarded almost £3.25 million in 33 new grants to organisations, supporting 124,729 people through its grant-giving programme. The grants focus on the enhancement of arts education and participation, improving access to the arts for all, and increasing diversity across the arts, culture and heritage sector. In 2017, the Trustees remain committed to support projects which make a visible positive impact on the quality of life of both individuals and local communities as well as continuing to explore the ways in which the barriers to the development of talent in the arts can be overcome. Entries are now open for the first Heritage Angel Awards in Northern Ireland

The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society is bringing the Heritage Angel Awards to Northern Ireland for the first time to celebrate the efforts of local people, either individuals or groups, who have saved historic buildings and places. The Awards are funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and the Department for Communities. A very exciting opportunity has arisen to join The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, a leading Higher Education conservatoire specialising in the theatre arts.

This role will provide a newly graduated musical director the essential next step into professional practice. Central will offer a specialist experience within a training environment. Central’s staff will be the Associates’ professional colleagues and will mentor the Associate during the period of engagement. The Associate Musical Director will be able to enhance the School’s Undergraduate BA Acting Musical Theatre course through peer-to-peer support of BA Acting Musical Theatre students and by demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm in developing projects.

Applicants must have knowledge and understanding of a Musical Theatre repertoire and hold a degree or equivalent in Music. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate evidence of strong keyboard skills and understanding of sung voice techniques.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Associate Musical Director will be awarded by Central following an application and interview process. There will be one available Fellowship for the year 2017/18.

SIX THEATRES AWARDED GRANTS BY UK THEATRES SMALL GRANTS SCHEME

Theatres Trust are pleased to announce the tenth round of awards from its UK Theatres Small Grants Scheme (UKSGS) offering grants of up to £5,000 and supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and Judy Craymer MBE.

The recipients for Round 10 are:• Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol to build a new dimmer room which will support a new studio space. £4,635• Criterion Theatre, Coventry to tackle an urgent asbestos removal project and rebuild the scenery store. £5,000• Farnham Maltings towards the installation of two new lifts which will improve the accessibility of the stage and rehearsal spaces. £5,000• Citizen’s Theatre, Glasgow for works to clear the ceiling space and make sure it remains in a safe condition. £4,320• Acorn Theatre, Penzance for a number of essential health and safety works to raise handrails and secure the building. £5,000• The Bear Pit, Stratford-Upon-Avon to improve stage access and install a new ventilation system. £5,000

Shortlist for Scottish Heritage Angel Awards 2017 announced

The search to find Scotland’s ‘heritage angels’ is gearing up, with the final shortlist for the Scottish Heritage Angel Awards 2017 revealed today (Wed 27 Sep).

Comprising 12 nominees across four different categories, the shortlist showcases a range of diverse heritage projects across the country, from the full scale reconstruction of an Iron Age roundhouse in Dumfries and Galloway to the restoration of a medieval kirk at Kirkmichael on the Black Isle.

From the brothers who have transformed a derelict Victorian baths into an indoor BMX park to a milestone devotee who has saved over 150 markers, the Historic England Angel Awards, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, celebrate the efforts of individuals and local groups across the country that have devoted their time and energy to bringing irreplaceable historic places back to life.

This year’s shortlist recognises the invaluable contribution of an apprentice mason who braved high winds to secure a Lundy Island landmark, the production organisation which helps to dismantle stereotypes of disability and the local preservation trust determined to protect a fragile part of their county’s heritage, among others.

New funding from Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation to address gap in traditional construction skills at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded a grant of £95,447 towards Historic England’s Heritage Skills Programme, part of the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings project to restore the iconic Grade I listed Main Mill and Grade II listed Kiln in Shropshire.

The new programme offers training opportunities, work-based placements and continuing professional development opportunities for trainees, students, contractors, craftspeople and other professionals.

Heritage volunteers, professionals and organisations from across the country were honoured in the capital this evening (Monday 16th October), as the winners of the Scottish Heritage Angel Awards 2017 were revealed.

Hosted by author and broadcaster Vanessa Collingridge at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, the ceremony saw winning finalists in each of the four award categories crowned in a celebration of the groups, individuals, volunteers and professionals who have played a special part in caring for the nation’s historic environment.

The quest for the first ever Heritage Angels in Northern Ireland came to a conclusion tonight with the presentation of six awards at the inaugural Heritage Angel Awards NI, which took place in the Grand Opera House, Belfast. The awards funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation with further support from the Department for Communities celebrated individuals and groups who have rescued historic buildings or sites, worked as craftsmen or apprentices, or recorded and interpreted historic places.

Historic England Angel Awards Winners 2017

On Monday 20 November 2017 Andrew Lloyd Webber announced the winners of the Historic England Angel Awards 2017.

Supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, the Historic England Angel Awards celebrate the efforts of individuals and local groups across the country that have devoted their time and energy to bringing irreplaceable historic places back to life.

The ceremony was co-hosted by Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose first love has always been our nation’s heritage, and historian Bettany Hughes at the Palace Theatre in London. Nominees came from across the country to celebrate the achievements of all groups.

The brothers who transformed derelict baths into an indoor BMX park, the woman behind a complex project to restore the Piece Hall in Halifax, young film-makers with learning difficulties in Newcastle, an apprentice mason working at extreme heights in Northumberland and a man who made it is personal mission to repair and paint hundreds of milestones across Norfolk are all celebrated as winners and the Grade I listed The Piece Hall in Halifax was named the first ever Overall Winner!

Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation awards 28 new grants

This November, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded grants worth a total of £686,133 to 28 projects across the UK and internationally. Championing the breaking down of barriers to engagement in the arts, many of the organisations rewarded this autumn will use their grant to specifically engage young people and those from hard-to-reach and minority backgrounds. This follows on from last December’s Centre Stage report, which urged the theatre profession to take action to improve the pipeline of diverse talent into the arts.

From apprenticeships to PhDs, these projects will benefit people as far flung as America to across the UK in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and throughout England to projects in Northampton, Newcastle Under Lyme, Portsmouth, Lancaster, Warwick, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Norwich.

American Theatre Wing's Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative

The American Theatre Wing announced today the recipients of the 2017 Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative Classroom Resource Grants. Grant requests of up to $100,000 were considered for K-12 public schools, with nearly 200 applications received from across 40 states.

“Arts education, and making theatre available to all young persons, is vital to the growth of our culture and society. The grant proposals received this year have shown the widespread need for arts funding in primary and secondary schools across America. I am proud that we are now entering the second year of this program, and am excited for the years to come,” said Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings - students making great bricks

Shrewsbury Colleges Group students have become the first to gain hands-on experience of traditional construction methods, using 18th Century Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings as a site for hands-on learning.

On Thursday 8 March, 12 Level 1 and 2 Brickwork students spent the morning at the Flaxmill Maltings site learning to make the ‘great’ bricks that were used in the construction of the iconic Grade I listed Main Mill - the world’s first iron-framed building and forerunner of modern day skyscrapers, which was built in 1797.

The session is part of Historic England’s Heritage Skills programme, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation which offers a number of training opportunities, work-based placements and continuing professional development opportunities for construction trainees, students, contractors, craftspeople and professionals. The programme is being made possible under the wider £20.7 million National Lottery refurbishment of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.

Gala concert at the London Palladium for 5th anniversary of the Music in Secondary Schools Trust

On Monday 23rd April, the Music in Secondary Schools Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme will celebrate its 5th anniversary with a special gala concert at the London Palladium.

Featuring 250 young musicians from 10 London schools participating in the programme, they represent the 5,000 young people who have benefited from free classical instrumental tuition since the inception of the charity.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded 22 new grants to support emerging artists and the provision of music education, performing arts training and heritage skills.

These 22 new grants are worth a total of £630,060 and are spread to projects across the UK and beyond. Grants will ensure access to high quality arts education, nurture skills to ensure the preservation of heritage and support emerging artists at the early stages of their careers. Particular focus is placed on projects that increase diversity and break down barriers to participation in the arts.
